When we’re again able to congregate, here’s Time Out NY critic’s favorite hangouts.
Adam Feldman’s current top spot is Club Cumming (co-owned by Alan Cumming) in the East Village.
Monday is open mike night with a different theme every week. Sometimes people show up with props to go with the show tune. Other nights feature knitting, jazz, or a drag queen competition. During the pandemic, while the Club’s closed, sales from its gift shop are donated to a Community Chest for its employees. Then there’s The Duplex in the West Village with a piano bar on the first floor, a cabaret Off-Broadway theater, and drag show on the second floor. Also in the neighborhood is Marie’s Crisis basement piano bar that is now live streaming shows every night via the private Facebook group “Marie’s Group.”,
Feldman, who is also the president of the New Drama Critics Circle, feels that facebook and twitter are good for theater – “any amount of enthusiasm and fandom is good. You want to have that conversation. That includes when people don’t like things…It’s when people stop talking about it that you should be concerned.”*
